Mosley Street Metrolink Stop Closure - Ratification Notice
Updated 31 October 2011
Due to the £1.4 billion expansion of the Metrolink network, the number of trams through the city centre will more than double. In order to ensure a reliable service and avoid bunching of the extra trams in the city and through the Market Street/ Piccadilly Gardens/ Mosley Street junction, the Mosley Street stop needs to be removed.
To cater for this removal, the nearby stops at Piccadilly Gardens and St Peter's Square have already been widened and improved as part of Metrolink's wider programme of improvements in the city centre.
Permission was sought from the Department for Transport (DfT) in November 2010 and a period of consultation followed which ended in February 2011.
The Office of Rail Regulation has now ratified the closure and requires Transport for Greater Manchester to display the Notice (link below) at the stop for a period of 4 weeks.
The effect of this decision is that Transport for Greater Manchester will be allowed to decommission the Mosley Street stop after this four week period. However, the stop will remain open for the time being, pending the introduction of new Passenger Information Displays to direct passengers to the next available Altrincham service. This is not likely to be until the New Year.
The precise date services will cease at Mosley Street stop will be publicised well in advance of the closure.
