Manchester Cycling Survey Results

Thank you to all those cyclists who took part in our Manchester Cycle Survey.

490 completed responses were received between 16/06/11 and 30/06/11.

The survey was conducted to get feedback from current cyclists about the cycling facilities in the city centre and barriers to cycling in Manchester, and provide evidence for the Transport for Greater Manchester bid for government funding to improve walking and cycling across Greater Manchester.

TfGM and Manchester City Council (MCC) are currently reviewing all of the responses that have been provided, and analysing the results in more detail.

In the meantime we are able to share the following results:

We asked about cycle parking facilities in the City Centre, with respondents identifying the following as being the 5 priorities for improving cycle parking:

  1. the number of spaces (90% think it is important);
  2. enclosed parking facilities (82% think it is important);
  3. shelter from the weather (81% think it is important);
  4. better CCTV coverage (80% think it is important); and
  5. improved lighting (78% thinking it is important).

We also asked about barriers and priorities for improving cycling in Manchester. The top 5 priorities for improvement were identified as follows:

  1. more segregated cycle lanes;
  2. safe storage
  3. improved road maintenance
  4. road safety
  5. cycle awareness for drivers

Further feedback will be provided directly to those respondents who provided us with their contact details over the next few weeks.

We hope to conduct further surveys in the next few months in conjunction with other councils across Greater Manchester and local cycle groups, to help us understand barriers to cycling and issues encountered by cyclists across the region.

Many thanks for your help so far.
