Better Bus Area Application – July 2013

On 26th February 2013, DfT published guidance for a competitive process open to local transport authorities, in partnership with bus operators, to bid for one or more parts of their area of responsibility to be designated a Better Bus Area.

In partnership with First Manchester and Manchester City Council, TfGM applied, on 5 July 2013, for the “North Manchester Circular”, the catchment area of the Manchester – Higher Blackley circular routes 88/89, to be designated a Better Bus Area.

If successful, bus service operators’ grant (BSOG) paid to First for commercial journeys on the route would be progressively devolved to TfGM; this money, along with ‘top up’ funding from DfT, would be used to fund a range of bus priority, signalling and enforcement measures on the route.

This would significantly improve the passenger experience by providing greater regularity of journey times and service punctuality.

If the application is successful, it is anticipated that TfGM, First Manchester and Manchester City Council would also develop a Quality Partnership Scheme to help protect and maintain the investment on the route to ensure that benefits to passengers are safeguarded.

You can find the original bid document here together with the accompanying catchment map and schemes map. The letter from the Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee that accompanied the application can be found here.
