Greater Manchester’s Quality Bus Corridors

Each year over 263 million journeys are made using public transport in Greater Manchester. 84% of these journeys are made by bus, particularly by people who do not have regular access to a car.

It is because of the importance of these bus journeys that Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) and local councils have been developing a 300km network of Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs). These corridors are designed to:

  • improve journey times and the reliability of bus services
  • improve facilities at bus stops, particularly to make it easier for people to get on and off buses
  • introduce new and improved pedestrian crossings
  • provide better facilities for cyclists.

Three of these QBCs come together in central Manchester near where London Road meets Fairfield Street. This area is very busy. New developments are also being built nearby, meaning more people will travel to, through and from this area in the future.
