Our Proposals
Update on Proposals to improve travel around the Old Fire Station
The information leaflet on this web site was widely distributed during the public consultation undertaken between 6th March and 13th April 2007.
As a result of the consultation process the following changes to the proposals presented in the leaflet have been made:
- The bus lane shown as proposal item i in the leaflet will now be introduced in conjunction with a new link road for buses, taxis and cycles only that will be constructed through the paved area on the frontage of Opal House. Minshull Street South will remain as it is. The whole area will be repaved and the seven existing trees removed and replaced with ten new trees of a more appropriate species in a new landscaping plan.
- The separate pedestrian and cycle traffic signals on Fairfield Street close to the junction with Cobourg Street are to be upgraded to Toucan facilities and incorporated into a new traffic signal installation that will also control access to the above new link road.
- The alighting only bus stop on Aytoun Street shown in the leaflet just to the North of Minshull Street will now be located just to the south of Minshull Street.
- The existing Toucan crossings over the London Road Metrolink tracks close to Store Street will remain unchanged and link to a new northbound contra-flow cycle lane on London Road that will lead from here up to the Auburn Street junction.
These amended proposals are shown in the two plans below
Construction started on 23rd June 2008 and is scheduled to be completed by mid-November 2008.
