This website has been produced to provide detailed information about improvements to improve travel around the Old Fire Station and near to Piccadilly station in central Manchester.

This area of central Manchester is particularly busy. This means there are a number of issues affecting travel around the Old Fire Station, railway station and along some major roads. In particular,

  • since the new entrance to the Rail Station opened more people are waiting for and getting on and off buses outside Piccadilly Station and The Old Fire Station. This means that more buses are stopping on London Road which sometimes causes traffic to queue back towards Piccadilly and through the Fairfield Street junction.
  • turning right from Fairfield Street into London Road is difficult and straight on traffic is restricted to a single lane.
  • crossing London Road and Fairfield Street is difficult for pedestrians.
  • traffic and buses are delayed when trams need to cross London Road.
  • inbound buses are delayed on Fairfield Street on the approach to the Travis Street junction.
