Manchester city centre

Making buses a priority

The city is growing and we need to ensure that the transport network continues to support this growth.

The plans for Manchester city centre link more bus services between Shudehill and Piccadilly, benefitting bus passengers by improving journeys across the city centre.

A key part of the Bus Priority Package, work in the city centre was completed in March 2016 with changes made to both Portland Street and Princess Street introduced.

We've made a section of Princess Street was made two-way to all traffic. A key change for many, the operation of two-way traffic between Major Street and the Mancunian Way now means that vehicles now have better connections to the city from Upper Brook Street which will be essential when work to transform Oxford Road is complete.

To ensure that priority is given to buses, cyclists and hackney carriages, a key section of Portland Street was changed. In March 2016, Portland Street was changed for good meaning that general traffic is now using alternative routes. To see how the area has changed, we produced a map which shows the new road layout.
