Electrification of the Manchester to Preston via Bolton line

As part of Network Rail’s ongoing commitment to electrifying around 300km of the region’s rail network, work will soon begin on the Manchester to Preston via Bolton line.

Impact on train services between Bolton and Manchester from 2 May to 4 October 2015

Between 2 May and 4 October 2015, there will only be a single line in operation through Farnworth tunnel in order for Network Rail to prepare the tunnel for the installation of overhead lines. During this time service frequency will be reduced between Bolton and Manchester.

At weekends, the line through Bolton will be closed until October with rail replacement buses in operation.

The work will be carried out by Network Rail and during this time they are committed to keeping as many passengers moving as possible.

Network Rail will be working closely with Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express to keep passengers informed throughout the work.
