Statement on Metrolink power failure affecting early Monday morning services

Peter Cushing, Metrolink Director for Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “I want to apologise to those people affected by this morning’s incident.

“A major power cut at around 8.30am meant that Metrolink services on some lines were suspended for around half an hour – longer for the Eccles line – with further delays as the service reformed. There was also a knock-on impact on traffic in and around Piccadilly due to a tram blocking London Road.

“We got services back up and running as soon as possible and Metrolink passengers were also able to use their tickets on nearby commercial bus services during this period.

“Our initial investigations confirm the power failure was due to a contractor working in the vicinity of St Peter’s Square striking an uncharted cable during excavation works.

“This caused significant and unacceptable disruption for commuters and I want to make it clear that I will be taking this up at the highest level with the contractor to understand how it happened, and to ensure it does not happen again. Repair work will take place overnight.”
