Abnormal Indivisible Loads

Turbine Blade Convoy Passing through EdenfieldThe Road Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) General Order 2003 defines an Abnormal Indivisible Load as "a load that cannot, without undue expense or risk of damage, be divided into two or more loads for the purpose of being carried on a road". This legislation is underpinned by Section 44 of The Road Traffic Act 1988.

Abnormal Indivisible Load dimensions exceed one or more of the following:

  • A gross vehicle weight of 44,000 Kgs (or 11.5 tonnes per axle)

  • An overall width of 2.9 metres (9'6")

  • A rigid length (the load less the tractor unit) of 18.3 metres (60'0")

  • An overall length of 25.9 metres (84'9")

Freight vehicles which exceed these dimensions may only travel following notification clearance from the Police and Highway Authorities affected by the proposed route. This includes all mobile cranes, regardless of their particular dimensions and weight. The minimum statutory timescale for notification (with indemnity) is 2 clear working days. This does not include weekends or bank holidays. Full details of notice periods may be obtained from the TfGM Abnormal Loads Unit on the contact telephone number below.

TfGM operates a 'short notice' movement request policy. Please telephone the TfGM Abnormal Loads Unit before commencing the movement. After 3pm, contact details can be left on the Abnormal Loads answer machine, so that action can be taken the next working day. If the movement is for the next working day, it should not take place until verbal authorisation has been granted, by the TfGM Abnormal Loads Unit.
